What is Spay and Neuter Surgery?

Spay surgery is when the female pet have their reproductive organs removed so that she cannot get pregnant. Neuter surgery is when the male pets get their testicles removed so that they cannot get the female pet pregnant. Both surgeries are very routine and beneficial. Our veterinarians at our animal hospital can perform spay or neuter surgery for your pet, if needed.

What Are The Benefits?

Aside from helping control the pet population, there are several benefits associated with spay and neuter surgery. Most importantly, this surgery can prevent the formation of many dangerous diseases. In females, spaying can reduce the risk of mammary infections and cancer and can completely eliminate the risk of uterine cancer. In males, neuter surgery can eliminate the risk of testicular cancer.

Is There An Age Limit For This Pet Surgery?

Spay and neuter surgery can be performed on cats or dogs at any age. Most commonly, this type of pet surgery is performed on younger pets, usually around 8-10 weeks of age. This surgery is relatively low risk, but chances of complications during surgery does increase as your cat or dog becomes older. Before performing any type of surgery at our veterinary clinic, our veterinarians will need to perform a full diagnostic panel to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo surgery. Overcrowding in shelters has become a nationwide epidemic, so many shelters put spay and neuter surgery as a priority.

At Companion Pet Clinic in Vancouver, we are passionate about keeping your cat or dog healthy. Our animal hospital understands that this type of pet surgery is important in preventing overcrowding in shelters and how it helps your cat or dog prevent possible diseases.
